Of the ones that I use:
HSBC - good for Faster Payments, 8% Regular Savings account and customer service.
LTSB - good for paying 4% interest on their Vantage accounts, not so good with Faster Payments.
Halifax - good for paying £5 per month for £1,000 per month passing through their accounts, 5% Regular Saver with a monthly maximum of £500 and OKish for Faster Payments.
Nationwide - good for foreign currency withdrawals abroad and Cash back credit card - pathetic for interest rates and Faster Payments.
I have the top 3 in your list and always get a speedy transfer from all 3 using FPS. My 8% regular savings is up next month, I wonder if they'll offer the same for another year without having to get a current account with fees?Justice for the 96 YNWA

You're having more luck then me then because they fail more than they succeed for me lately. Even had my online access suspended at the start of this month after attempting several FPs in quick succession (to existing, long standing, payees)!0 -
They can be temperamental at times and they were slow to get them operational. The Vantage account 4% in-credit interest rate applies to balances between £5k and £7k.0

Multiple faster payments to the same account on the same day from my Halifax account have caused problems for me before - two a day seems to be the limit? - but I've never had a problem with ones that do go thru as FPs. FPs to and from Lloyds have always been fine for me too.
As for the "best" account Halifax is the best option for me at the moment, but out of my other current accounts I think I would only consider moving to Lloyds as an operational account.0 -
Okay.. I pay in about 1300 p/m, and end up with about 30 by the end of the month. I require good online banking. A healthy overdraft wouldn't hurt. Faster Payments, I guess. Excellent customer support.
So if all/most banks offer this, the only distinguishing thing is the interest... Enter: A&L with 5%...0 -

A Halifax Reward Account would probably offer you better returns, as you pay £1,000+ in per month, you'd receive £5 reward per month or £60 per year net of tax.
You'd need to have an average balance of £1,500 over a full year in the A&L account @5% to earn £60 net (£75 gross less 20% if you are a basic rate taxpayer).
As suggested otherwise, with A&L/Santander, forget customer service, excellent or otherwise.0 -

...except that A&L fails on the good online banking, and the faster payments, and on the customer support.
In your position, I'd open two accounts: a Halifax Reward Account, and a First Direct current account*. I'd get my wages paid into Halifax, then transfer them to FD. That way I'd be getting the benefit of the £5/month Reward, plus the excellent customer service and FP implementation of FD.
FD also gives you (subject to status) a £500 OD, of which the first £250 is free (i.e. no interest).
(*For the FD account, there's a funding requirement of £1500/month, or a monthly fee applies. Since your wages don't quite cover that, you could either transfer a bit of money back to Halifax and then back to FD again, or you could open one of their other accounts which causes the First Account fee to be waived - there's no need to leave more than £1 in them.)0 -
