Hi there, my partner and myself are hoping to move to scotland, my partner is finishing her degree in edinburgh University, We currenly live in Leeds, where i'm finishing of my degree, Im now studying for an IT Technician, we've had a look at some houses/flats around edinburgh but its far too expensive, our budget is 460 pcm, we dont want to live in the city center but would like to commute to the city, we think about 25 miles either direction is as far as we go. Falkirk seems nice is there any other places people can suggest, regards, Kieran

How about along the coast towards North Berwick? There are several train stations along that route - Longniddry, etc. I'm not sure what rents are like, but the transport links are good.
Good luck - I'm moving up to Edinburgh in a few years' time and will be house hunting too.

It depends on what kind of place you want to live and how you're going to commute in. Have you thought of Fife or the Borders? Or Linthigow? Livingston.
It is years since I graduated from Edinburgh, but their Accommodation Service was always good - not sure if they'd help with accommodation outside the city, but might be worth asking.0 -
I would expect your commuting costs from Falkirk (assuming you will be working in Edinburgh) will be quite high. You may be better looking at areas which are served by Lothian buses as you could then get a monthly buspass. You might have to pay more to rent but it could well balance out in travel costs. A monthly lothian buses pass is £42, a quick look online suggest a monthly trainpass is £156 from falkirk.
Lothian buses serve some way down the coast - prestonpans/seton sands/musselburgh might be options?0 -

Have you considered a shared flat or large bedsit as lodgers in someone's home?Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
My friend lives in Polmont, very near Falkirk. It's quite a nice wee place, good motorway access and has a train station on the line between Glasgow and Edinburgh (she commutes to Glasgow, her sister to Ed and Stirling). She and her sister rent a lovely 1st floor 2 bed flat with private parking for £400 a month + bills, just to give you some idea. 1 bed flats would be a bit cheaper (probably!).0

You can quite easily get a 1 bed flat for circa 450 pm in Portobello. Its roughly 3 miles from Edinburgh city centre and well provided by public transport. Portobello is Edinburgh's seaside.Smile, you are beautiful:)0

My son moved to Linlithgow and both he and his partner work in Edinburgh. The trains are fairly frequent and the journey I think takes about 20 minutes. It seems a safe place to live and quite pretty. For a good area I think property prices are quite reasonable. There is a high street, supermarkets, a large lake with swans. Fishing available. Easy reach of the coast.0

I live in Linlithgow and travel by train to Edinburgh Park. The train journey takes only 12 mins, but the cost of the season ticket is £109.00 per monthTreat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0
