Gas bill not covered by D/D - query about useage?
Just had the gas bill in. We pay by D/D every month and apparently we owe them £158. We have the option of paying this now as a lump sum or increasing the D/D from £48 to ?? (not stated yet).
Between our gas and electricity we pay a smidgeon over £200 per month so we need to address our useage which we are in the process of doing.
Our gas boiler was faulty, it first started showing signs a few months back when our hot water wasn't as hot as it used to be, nor were our rads. We had to turn the thermostats up almost full to get a decent heat/hot water for a bath. It's been repaired now with a new pump and a heat exchanger and we've been able to turn the thermostats down a bit again.
My question is, would this have caused a bigger gas bill or would this have had little or no impact?

Short answer? Yes. It is likely that the amount of gas consumed was larger due to the boiler faults, and this could be why you're left with a shortfall, along with the fact it's coming up to the end of Winter. The increased consumption is what will be pushing the DD up.0

If it wasn't heating efficiently due to the heat exchanger (hence the lower temps), then it'll have wasted a lot of energy struggling to heat the water.0

Unfortunately it sounds like you've left it running with the fault present during the coldest part of the year (and the coldest winter for 30 years), this will have greatly increased your consumption,No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Yes it seems so.In our defence, the fault started in a very gradual way and it was only with hindsight that we could pinpoint it. It had also been serviced and nothing was picked up then. It was only when the part failed totally that the engineer said it had likely been beginning to fail a while back.

You are paying £150 /month for electricity?!
Do you have a hotel, or indulge in a bit of indoor horticulture:D
I've a 3 bed semi and pay £30/month for gas and £20/month for electricity, thats around 10,000 Kwh gas and 2000 Kwh electricity. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
