Post building work clean up - any advice?

Hi folks,
I've recently had an extension built and as the project is coming to an end I've started the clean up operation. Everything is covered in dust - I've tried to keep on top of it, but it has been impossible. After spending all day yesterday on my knees scrubbing my stripped wooden floor only to have it dry out with dirty streaks all over it, not to mention the dyson only seeming to pick up half the dirt, I am rethinking my plan.
I need to get the carpets all steam cleaned, the curtains and upholstery could also do with the same treatment. I am guessing that if I put a damp cloth onto my walls it would bring off quite alot of dust, but would that be a good idea, or would it just smear it everywhere? All the windows need cleaning, inside and out, and every single surface in the house needs cleaning. In fact I think I need to take every single book out of the floor-to-ceiling bookcase and dust it!
So, I'm now thinking that it might be worth spending money on some help. Can anyone advise? would I be able to pay a company to do the whole lot, and if so how much would it cost? I'm not adverse to doing it myself, I just think it might take me months based on my progress yesterday!
Thanks, T

I would use a dry duster on the walls, anything wet will probably just turn any dust into dirty marks.
If you have been using your Dyson to hoover up lots of dust that the building work has made, check that your filters are clear - ours get clogged very frequently and need a good battering outside to unclog them (quicker than washing!)
Cant help with the carpets etc but I guess a professional clean might be a good plan.0 -
Keep at it! Unfortunately the dust stays in the air so will settle over a period of time but it will be clean again one day, honest!

sod that, just leave it, until it's all completely finished.
otherwise you'll spend another day "cleaning" it with the same outcome!!0 -
As Stated , is there any sense in cleaning up before the job is finished??0

I know it seems crazy - but I'm so sick of the dust!!! I've had a sore throat for ages because of it, and the biggest dirtiest stuff is over, now it's just smaller finishing jobs.
I actually spent ages last week cleaning, and now it looks much better. My lovely parents came and helped, we dusted every book in the house, and cleaned all the windows we could see out of and now the house is a much nicer cleaner environment!
I might still splash out on someone to come and professionally clean the carpets/curtains/sofa so any advise on this welcomed.
