CD reader for laptop.

Hi,
For some reason I can play cd's on my laptop but I cannot transfer information from my computer onto blank cd's,photo's,files etc. I have to use the floppy disc drive. Would it be expensive to fix?
It has worked but the hard drive broke and after it was fixed and all the software reinstalled,not a thing. It don't bother me too much except I have many pictures that I would like to save.
