The "cant live without site" is ancestry.co.uk (assuming you are in the uk and not got lots of rellies in the states or elsewhere). You can get a 14 day free trial on there which is what I did 6 years ago and I still sub because so much more is added every year. You will also need to realise that you will need to spend money on certificates and so on to verify information you do find.
Join genesreunited which is less than a tenner I think (go through quidco.com) and use the boards on there for help.
You will also need a good family tree program on your own computer which you add the info to as you go along, including all the sources etc. At the moment twrcomputing is offering the 2009 family treemaker for about £20 including 6 months basic ancestry sub (which you can always upgrade to the premium package). If you collect tesco coupons you can even use £15 worth ofthose for the 2010 family tree maker including 6 months basic ancestry sub.0 -

Or just bung free genealogy program into Google & take your pickEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0
