littleange_com wrote:Which router are you going for? I have found D-link to be the best, we have the G640T. I've never had any trouble connecting any wireless card or device to it, whether its a Wireless PCI card, Cardbus card, USB dongle, A PDA, or even a Mac.
I was gonna choose this NETGEAR DG834G ...DonnyDave wrote:If possible, I suggest that you run an extension lead round the outside of your room. The router and wireless card solution seems to be an expensive solution to me.
You're right but I have more options with wireless. I don't want my PC fixed somewhere.

why not go for a 108g router/card.... faster than a 54gsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Because it's only 108Mbs (less in reality) between the PC and the router. It's still then 2 / 4 / 8Mbs (whatever you pay for) connection to the internet, so no benefit unless you are connecting PC to PC within your home.0 -
You don't seem to need to stick the the same brand with a D-link router, although I've heard this is the case with a netgear router.
We mostly have netgear wireless cards both g and b all working perfectly with the d-link.
I agree with belkin though, tried a belkin router once and it was a nightmare to get working.0 -

Because if it is required to effectively move the PC across the room from the master socket, the extra speed is not required!

Ok my 2p's worth after reading some strange advice being given I have been trying to avoid posting in all the I want to go wireless repeated over and over threads.
Your buying a netgear router, good for you personally I have had sbad experiences with netgear kit failing and their returns are a nightmare other problems include no access to secure websites and intermittent connection dropping.
Dlink has always produced solid kit a small problem with the DSL 504T routers where the username field was limited to a max number of characters but apart from that my DLS504 has been working without problems for a few years now. That router isnt wireless so dont go buying one.
I bought a wireless access point by Belkin just after the 54g standard came out I paid alot for it at the time but networking is my job so I had to learn how to do it. this connects to my network and makes everything wireless.
I have installed a few of the 54g modem/routers without problems and would recomend them.
As for buying a wireless card I have bought loads Dlink, belkin, edimax, Kcorp, dynamode, buffalo and USR. The Dlink and Kcorp have been really good, decent signals better than the dynamode, edimax and buffalo. As for how it will connect to your PC if your ok opening the pc buy an internal PCI card why use a USB port when you can use a PCI slot? and they are cheaper.
Speed wise everything is limited by the slowest wireless link if the router is 11mbps then a 108/125/140mbps card will run at 11mbps. 108/125/140 are less stable than 54 if you want 108/125/140 then your better to buy the same make of card and router as the 108/125/140 standard isnt really a standard each maker uses different way to acheive it. if you buy a 108/125/140 card and router dont moan if the speed are rarely those stated. Also remember your internet connection is only up to 8mbps so the higher speeds are only required for data transfers between pc's.
So what to buy? who knows but you can save money buy buying a pack consisting of the router/modem and a wireless card I recomend Dlink and Belkin Both work fine for me and many of my customers.0 -
