OP, your Service Packs are way out of date, you are still on Vista SP1. Vista SP2 has been out since April '09. When your system is clean you need to run Windows Updates and get SP2 installed ASAP. Then make sure you are set to install future updates automatically.
Not keeping up to date can leave big security holes in your system.

ok, none of these work. i cant get anything to open up - everything just says link broken. when i right clicked and tried to save target at i got a message saying site could not be found. i think this may all be beyond my very limited computer abilities. i've been trying to fix it since i got home from work (about 3 hours now) and am having to restrain myself from throwing it out the window!! thank you all ever so much for your help and patience but i think i should just close it down now before i smash it from frustration!! i'll try again tomorrow i think.
    thanks again all. xx:mad:

  • Hello if anyone is still there! Ok glutton for punishment that I am I had another go and managed to download the combifix as directed by going into it via 'hidemyass.com'. This all seemed to go to plan and it went thru all the stages as listed in the user guide and then produced a log. However I had an error message "Cant Execute 'CEC_MAIN.exe' please re-install this programme". I get error messages whenever I try to do anything or connect to net "illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". now I can't get my laptop to connect to net to post the log or do anything else (im typing this on my phone!). I also can't find AVG to turn security back on and can't open control panel to turn firewall back on. So sorry to be such a muppet if I've done something wrong but any ideas?

got the feeling you did not download a real version of combofix, its only hosted on bleepingcomputer

can you not download the proper copy on someone elses PC and put on a usb drive or a CD ??

you may need to rename combofix.exe to cleanupmypc.exe or something to get it to run properly

Well you know how I couldn't get bleeping computer link to open? One of things I could get to open was facebook so I went onto the bleeping computer facebook page where I found a discussion topic that said if u couldn't open the website because of a virus then u shud try going thru a website called 'hidemyass which I did. When I was then in the bleeping computer site I downloaded the combifix thing from there. Do u think this could have been a dodgy version then? I thought it would be ok because the link was recommended on the bleeping computer facebook page.

in post # 4 the log clearly shows you had already run "combofix" before. This looks like an attempted repair gone wrong. without all the facts it is very difficult to do a "distance" repair. what was original problem and what steps were made at an attempted repair?
