I see where you're coming from and no, there's no evidence of the kind that would court, but if the slip is time stamped, the cashier is diligent in filling out what denominations they pass and there is no blatant tampering, then the bank will say that there is sufficient evidence to process a correction with or without the customer's knowledge or consent.

I find this VERY worrying! Just because the bank assumes an error with my transaction occurred doesn't prove that it did occur. If the staff member made one mistake she may well have made others - and, just because it seems possible/probable that the mistake was made with me, surely doesn't give them carte blanche to take money out of my account to make THEIR till come right?

If I check my change etc and know that is is correct then I certainly don't see why ANYONE has the authority to say 'no, it wasn't right - I'm taking £xxx back from you!' with no actual proof other than a couple of bits of paper with the cashiers notes on them.

Somebody please tell me they can't do that before my blood pressure goes through the roof!!!

With regard to CCTV, it will depend on the branch and which counter the customer is at. Obviously, it will be difficult to tell exactly what is happening, but if the discrepancy is large (eg a dispute between £100 and £1000) it would show a longer time to count it out and a larger bundle of notes

Like soolin says, when the cashier is calling the customer, they are 99% sure that this is where the error lies and are just trying to be thorough. If they can't get through but they're sure that they have found the error, then the will go ahead and process the correction.

NB - Just to be clear, the cashier isn't looking for different ways to just "make THEIR till come right". They will be looking for where the mistake has been made and to return both parties to the correct position. A subtle but important distinction I think.

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
I was a cashier in my youth and we would debit an account if it was obvious but if we couldn't absolutely proof beyond any doubt then we had to file a loss against our name:(

I'm not sure what we would have done had the accounts not had enough money in them?

Also... I remember paying in a cheque as cash, the customer withdrawing the money, me correcting the error and them being £200 overdrawn within 1 hour:eek: then the cheque bounced- I felt awful :( But they must have realised my mistake:(

good luck op and stand your ground!

Its a bit too subtle for me! If I am certain that my wallet is correct and that I checked my change/money as it was handed over to me then I am going to feel that a cashier who says that their bits of paper show that I was given too much change is wrong and that they are just trying to sort their till out to the detriment of my wallet. I won't happy about that - and I don't think many other honest customers would be either. Obviously, those that know darn well they were overpaid are a different matter - but it still seems wrong to just grab money back without any real proof. I can't see that the bank staff being 99%sure is good enough.
