PPI Barclays Bank- help: newbie

Hi all MSE's
Ive just 'fell in' that barclays have been charging me ppi!! Im embarassed to say this has been going on for some years, and cos the statements didnt say 'PPI' or 'Insurance' I thought it was the charge for using Barclays as my provider. I know- I feel totally dumb.
I rang the C/services and they said yup, PPI, gave me an address and just said write to it!

Ive marked up an intial letter, saying I didnt know it was PPI, requested they stop taking it, and repay what they have taken, with interest.

Looking thro the forums, it seems these institutions make it difficult and a long process....am I right?
Does anyone know HOW to find out how long Ive been paying this charge? Is there a formal way to find out?

Is there any 'legal' jargon I need to include in my letter to make it formal, and then what should I expect to happen?

Additionally, is there a 'cut off' period... I suspect Ive been paying this for some years...lots...so how much should they be backpaying?
Should I get a compensationary payment too?

On top of this, I had a loan from them about 6 years ago, and Im guessing if they tagged PPI onto my standard acc, they prob did on my loan. The loan is totally satisfied, but can I do anything? I have no paperwork in relation to this now cos I thought it was finished with.

Help! It just seems so confusing, and this is the only place I know I will get valuable Information.

Thankyou all who reply, and of course, Ill keep MSE posted with my outcomes as and when they happen.

    Hi there

Do not worry, many have been in this situation and your not to know if they did not explain this PPI business to you when you taken out the finance.

You could try by requesting a SAR (Subject Access Request), they have 40 days to send everything they hold on your account, but you have to enclose a payment of £10 either postal order or cheque payment, something may be useful within the SAR.
Details of SAR and letter template for this here:

Hope this helps, please keep us posted good luck X;)

    Thankyou di3004:

I have used the 'letter one' template as found in the PPI Discussion original forum, but changed it a little to apply to my bank account, not loan.
I will post it r/del tomorrow, and wait for my rejection! lol.
I am going to do SAR to BBnk too, and to an old credit card.

Just one question: I moved about 16 mnths ago, and the CC was paid off just as I was leaving my last address. Do you know, or anyone else how to apply a SAR request to an old address, but have the information sent to a new address?
    This ones got me stumped.

Thanks again di3004- I feel a bit dumb cos I always thought I was excellent with my finances: Hmmm, shows they will get your money ANYWAY they can, even if youre a bit savvy!

Its my pleasure and your doing very good here :T;).

I would let them know in writing of your older address details but request they send your SAR to your new one, that should not be a problem at all.

lol we have all been there :D, keep up your great work, you will do okay here.

Even if your account was opened a long time ago, providing it is still in use or closed within the last 6 years, you should be fine in being able to attempt a reclaim.

    Good luck!

    UPDATE: Filled with confusion!!
Ok, after sending my original complaint to BBank, I checked my statement the following month, and the PPI was still being deducted from my account. I called them, (logging WHO I spoke to and the date) and requested for a second time that they cease this payment as I was disputing it......
I then recieve the standard questionaire regarding reclaiming, to which I dutifully respond....
Following month- theres the charge again!
    However......
Today, I recieved a letter from BBank stating that although 'they do not accept liability' that as a 'Goodwill gesture' they will repay all the PPI I paid for my 2001 LOAN plus interest and 8% fee Great! Result being a credit to my account of original premium (£172.04); interest (£35.22) on the premium loan, and 8% interest (£132.73). Total repayment of £339.99.
The original complaint (made in May) was NOT for PPI on a loan, it was for PPI on my overdraft! And its still being applied to my account.
So, I call them and am put through to a Cust Services Manager. I say Thank you very much for refunding me for my loan but that was not my original complaint. She informed that basically, as this charge has been on my account for such a long time, I should have been more 'on the ball' and complained earlier.
    Huh?
I have now told BBank that as far as Im concerned, they have not resolved nor addressed my original complaint of PPI on my overdraft, and therefore they can generate as many new complaint reference numbers as they please; I am going directly to the FSO.
Am awaiting the paperwork for FSO who have taken my complaint!
    Yay!
If they had been a little more 'on the ball', then they wouldnt have refunded me for something that as far as BBank were concerned, was not an issue with me, their customer.
So, in ref to the original post I made.....
I have been refunded for the loan, without requesting it, and am now in the process of FSO for the overdraft complaint.
    Phew!!

Cooorwph! Took a Long ole time, but at last, sort of success!!
So, updated, I was refunded PPI on a loan with my B/Bank. I did not apply for the refund, but had requested that B/Bank refund 'Services Charges' (as displayed on my statement) which turned out to be hidden PPI.
I recieved £670 refund, on top of the original refund £339.99. So, MSE: a great lil tickle courtesy of your kind selves, and thank you to the posters who have given their time to advise.
Good Luck to reclaimers.... just remember - its YOUR money ; youre just getting it Back.
