Uni books (social work)

HI all! Does anyone know of any sites that sell 2nd hand text books please? I have tried ebay & amazon but they still seem pretty pricey and dont always have the right editions.

I'm looking for Understanding social work 2005 (2nd edition) by Neil Thompson (Palgrave)
and
Social Work skills 2005 (2nd edition) by Pamela Trevithick (open university press)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Sam

Id go through quidco and see if you can get any cash back that way.

Green metropolis, someone might not know what they are worth
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

https://www.abebooks.co.uk (go through quidco for cashback) They specialise in secondhand books for academia.

alternatively you may have a notice board in your faculty or school advertising second hand books, which would mean no postage fees.

Realistically, you're not going to find the latest editions of these books at bargain prices. :o You may find that it is better value for money to buy the previous editions of these books, particularly as these are more general background texts to theory/social work and more for an introduction to the field, rather than the sort of texts that you would be expected to refer to in essays.

You could also borrow the books from the library and take some notes from any bits that you feel are crucial. (I'm not saying that you can get away with not buying any texts but I would avoid buying intoductory texts.)

You do need to get the most up-to-date edition of any Social Work Law texts that you buy as there has been a lot of changes to legislation recently. I'd recommend Alison Brammer's book as it is really clearly laid out and easy to refer back to. Some of the other law books are quite daunting and not very user friendly. :o
  • Sam, I found that the net was an excellent research resource for the complete texts of referenced stuff in textbooks. Journals available online eg Community Care, are an excellent way of keeping bang up to date with current thinking and direction of travel. Good luck.

I would definitely buy the Thompson book, and an up to date law book, but apart from that I'd wait. You should get access to academic journals at uni and these will be the most useful resource you can access.
