Great White Sharks in South Africa

Has anyone been to South Africa to see Great White Sharks? I've been talking about it for years and want to start putting together a spreadsheet of things I need to save for, it might take me 5 or 6 years to save up all the money but I'd like to have some figures to aim for.

I was reading somewhere that Shark attacks on humans are on the increase in certain areas.

There is some suggestion that Sharks are starting to associate food with humans due to the many organised 'cage' trips which use food to attract them for close-up thrills.

Gansbaai in Sth.Africa [30ks from Hermanus 100ks from Capetown] have cage diving, there are about 6 boats doing this, the results seem to good according to the various blurbs you read. I offer this as information I am against the practice there has been a prevelance of surfers and scubadivers being attacked the shark attacking wet suited swimmers mistaking them for seals.

Although I agree with you about increasing attacks on humans, this is probably due to divers feeding sealife. There have been many recorded shark attacks (due possibly to being mistaken for a seal) for many years before cage diving started.

I had a friend who did a night dive with great whites - I can find out where he did this in SA.

    Hi

I attempted to do it in 2006 in Hermanus, unfortunately i had a dodgy stomach and they wouldnt allow me on the boat...i was gutted. One of our group did do it and the footage was great. I think it was about £60 for the trip which lasted most the day but could have changed a lot since i was there. Very jealous if you get to go!!

    fewer the better !!!
  • fewer the better !!!

erm why ? just because a few surfers and the like get attacked from time to time ? considering how many people swim and play in the ocean you have more chance of being run over by a bus on a sunday than you do being attacked by a shark !!
