Digital Camera Needed

Hey there peeps,
I'm looking for a good quality digital camera to buy for my mum's upcoming 50th.
I've so far checked the usual; comet, amazon, argos etc and am hard pressed to find a quality camera for my budget of around £50. It may be that as a gadget freak I am asking for too much, and that my mum would be quite happy with a run of the mill camera, but I'd like to get her the best I can afford.
Does anyone have any good websites to recommend?
All help gratefully received, hehehe.

Hi Kate,
I think you are being a gadget freak
Remember, it's the thought what goes into the product too, paying top money doesn't necessarily guarantee a good product. Good thought into the choice of a cheaper product is just as good.
Now, here's my suggestions for a Camera.
Look around, find the model which you think would be easy to use, has the highest Optical Zoom and Quality levels that is within your price range.
I myself use a Fuji Finepix and the picture quality is great (not photographer standards) it's 3MP but it takes some excellent pictures. Automatic controls provide some great photos and you can use manual for fine tuning.
Canons have a good reputation for Camera, I'd go for a Sony (Cybershot), Canon or Fuji series. They're all great, however I am preferential to Fuji's so I always buy them
If you need reviews check out http://www.tomshardware.com and http://www.steves-digicams.com
If you'd like to see some piccies let me know and I'll dump them online somewhere. Not really confident about putting my site online as the server has a disk issue atm which I'm not fixing as I'm getting a new computer

As a person of roughly your Mum's age I can strongly recommend that you pop down to Aldi and buy a camera from there. They come equipped with everything (SD card, car charger....). Whilst probably of no interest to a professional, I have taken some fantastic pics over the years. Their current one is £49.99 and is 12 megapixels - enough to blow up to wall-size!

Looks like a very nice package indeed, has everything needed and the quality is great.
I think it would be good if you uploaded or created links to some photos you have taken, it could help prove useful to show the quality of the camera photos

Oooh thanks for all the lovely responses peeps.
I have found "the" camera. Satisfies my geeky desires and came in bang on budget at £50. I got her the Samsung ES15, which is a 10MP and 3x Optical Zoom. Should suit Mum nicely for taking pics of family and pets.
Thanks again for your input.

I don't recall anyone suggesting a Samsung?
Not the best option, when it comes to cameras.0 -

They don't have to go with our suggestions, they're merely recommendations. All cameras have good points and bad points, but given the camera is for the posters mother I don't think the features of it is all that important as long as they are able to take some good photos with itOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

True, but Samsung really are not the best of cameras, any Panasonic, Fuji, Canon, Sony etc. would give far better results.0 -
Thanks for your advice, I personally have a Panasonic, but that's because I'm a gadget fiend. I'm sure my mum will love this though, she's not big on photography so much as uploading pics to facebook! hehehe
