He's also love to do some 'trash the dress' style shots but so far no one is willing to model for him (no surprise there really).

Can you explain what this means?
  • Thanks folks - that's the kind of constructive input I was after!

He was a fashion photographer and has done some freelance stuff for newspapers and mags so he isn't a complete novice. Recently he's doing portraits but has some really fresh ideas for weddings. I suppose I'm a little wedding obcessed with spending such a lot of time around brides.

We can't really use family or friends as they've all had their weddings many moons ago. And working alongside a 'professional' is often frowned upon by the pro's - funny bunch photographers lol!

I know when I did it I used my FIL but it meant that he wasn't really part of the celebration and I wasn't at all happy with the photographs either.

Oh, and we're in the Forest of Dean - between Gloucester and Bristol.

    Have PM'd you :)

Ohh - I'm in Gloucester and I know that there are lots of photographers around here - some better than others.
I have used a guy from Coleford for some photos that we were really happy with too (non wedding)

    Here's an idea.......

Why not "mock up" a wedding?? Get OH to photograph the "pretend" wedding, and thus he has some shots for portfolio and gets extra practice.
Maybe he could consider joining up with some local bridal companies (Dresses, cars, flowers etc) and doing a bit of a deal with them, that he takes photos of people in their dresses, with their flowers, standing by the car... that they can then use for their promotional stuff, but also adds to the portfolio??
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

'Trash the dress' is a photoshoot after the big day where the brides get to dress up again and do outragous things in their wedding dress - fix the car engine, go wading in the sea, decorate, gardening, walking the dog - think of the craziest most inappropriate thing to do in a wedding dress and you'll have an idea :D

I'm liking the idea of a mock wedding too - I still have a few friends in the business so shuld be able to get some detail shots for free, stationery, flowers etc.

Basically it is de-glamming the whole wedding dress photoshoot.

OH MY GOD WHO ACTUALLY DOES THAT

Sure, lets take the most expensive item of clothing I've ever bought and wreck it for a photo! No wonder he doesn't have any takers!!!

It does seem to be a growing trend, I think I'd cry if I did that to my dress!

If he's got a decent amount of good photos (non-wedding) beforehand, I wouldn't worry too much about starting out free. Start with a reasonable cost, offer people a free pre-shoot if they're anxious and things should grow from there...

not quite the same, but i had a friend who 'pushed' the wedding car while the groom sat at the wheel - looked really good and was funny to see/shoot/look back on

@ OP, i also suggest a mock wedding, and really like the idea of tying it in with the local wedding shops as promo - wouldn't necessarily get him the 'wedding' shots, but would help

Good luck, i'd consider him as well as a paid photographer, the paid photographer could just be told he was an over zealous family friend :D
