Mock Ceiling Beams - remove or repaint?

We've just move into a house where all of the downstairs ceilings have black painted black beams acros the ceiling.
Can't decide whether to just get rid and have ceilings skimmed, leave the beams as the are attempt to strip the black paint off an stain them brown.
Not quite sure if they'd completely wreck the ceilings trying to get them of.
The lounge has a huge floor to ceiling brick fireplace in it with a huge railway sleeper sized black beam across the top so they are kind of i keeping with it I guess.
Any advice?
Thanks

I take it they are real , my kitchen had fake plastic .
sorry your OP says fake !! edit
When I pulled them off , did not have to repair cieling , removed glue , sanded and a repaint0 -
If you decide to take them out, it would be easier and a lot cleaner to just put a false ceiling under them, board it and skim. Easy for wiring to new light fittings etc also.
