I know this is a bit of a strange thread but i am desperately looking for some advice. My partner moved into a new build house 8 years ago and has never had to pay for any of the electricity he has used since. The house was empty for a about a year before he moved in, this being his first house he was unsure what he had to do and as a result never contacted the electricity company to tell them that he was the new homeowner. There has never been any bills sent to the house or any corresponce regarding electricity. As each year went by he got more concerned about contacting the company and instead of dealing with it he has now just decided to ignore it. Can anybody tell me the best way to approach contacting the company and what the repercussions will be? thank you.

As he has not bothered to contact anyone the twelve-month back-billing limitation does NOT apply. He will have to pay for a full six years of bills. (He may get off with the first two years.) Five years in Scotland.0

i suggest he gets it sorted soon, so he knows what he's dealing with

Not only does he face six years of bills - they will be six years at the standard tariff of his local supplier so they will be fifteen to twenty-five percent more expensive than otherwise. At least there is no interest to pay and he will be able to spread the repayments over several years - but that will leave him tied to that supplier until the debt is paid so he will not be able to choose the cheapest supplier for ongoing useage.0

I suggest he moves out sharpish before the bill arrives0

If you want to PM me with your postcode and house number I can check on the central register who the supplier is, if any. Normally a supplier should have been appointed at the point that the meter has been installed but this does not always happen.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
