Cheaper to use gas or electric?

My gas CH is not heating the water for some reason! Will get an engineer out to have a look when finances allow!
My question is if I use the electric immersion to heat the tank for an hour, will it be more expensive than the using the gas CH to heat it for an hour?

Thank you! Better ring the engineer sooner rather than later in that case.:(

Have you checked the obvious, eg sticking motor valve?

Not being very mechanically minded but i will try and explain what happened. New build....4 years old, there are a couple of box type things outside the tank which I believe are valves! I think one of these was responsible for a high pitched noise when the timer during heating, or just when it went off! Then over the weekend the water failed to heat at all. The heating is still working though!
The electric immersion does heat the water!
Thanks for your advice so far.:)

They sound like the motor valves, try identifyig which one it is and moving the lever manually and listen to see if the valve operates. If not, it's a simple job to change the valve or the actuator.
Yes, the immersion will operate normally.
If you heard it making a noise, then it might have been a good idea to investigate it before it failed.
Post a picture of the valve in question if you can.
