  • This old chestnut. There are plenty of countries in Europe where petrol is more expensive and some where salaries are a lot less as well. Take Portugal, average £1.16 per litre, average annual salary something like £10k and motorways are toll roads:eek:, woe is the poor British motorist...

Hey Chucky, hope you still hold those Shell shares  Good article here.

The company said that last year it added new reserves equivalent to almost three times the amount of oil and gas it pumped.

Two points to mention here - Remember when the governement took 2.5% off VAT at the end of 2008 - they put 2p per litre onto the Excise Duty on petrol and diesel so that the motorist did not get a reduction.

When they then put the 2.5% back onto VAT in January, they did not remove the 2p from the duty.

We have all forgotten this hidden 2p increase (which is now 2.35p, because of the VAT on the 2p).

Secondly, why do newspapers still price their petrol in gallons - we stopped using gallons years ago and a large proportion of motorists have never bought their fuel in gallons. It's just good for scary headlines.

Just report the facts in today's context, guys - £5.41 per gallon is £1.19 per litre - bad enough, but not quite so scary as £5.41

I remember when people were in a panic about it going over £2 a gallon, it was about that time it was switched to doing it in litres and as it was a smaller amount showing, people didn't notice the price going over £2 a gallon.

Well most didn't....I still work it in gallons!

Think I am getting old...the above is certainly an indication I am getting old anyway :rotfl:
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Because they haven't worked out how to pretend it is the fault of the government yet.

Yep, fuel (and everything else) has really gone up in Euroland since we devalued the quid...

For a long time, quid to euro was around 1.40, so we've really stuck it to them pesky Belgians by increasing their fuel from £1 to £1.30 odd (or maybe they're still paying around a quid in local money..?).

Haven't checked fuel/anything price history in Euroland, just pointing out it's a bit silly saying their prices are higher because we don't get as many euros these days.
