Problems with meter readings

Options
my son has living in his current house for approx 4 yrs and has allways had problems with his meter readings (eon) ie the meters are never read even though the gas meter is outside of the house on the main road in the usual white box. He has allways phoned in with the meter readings when an estimate was sent out. Anyway latest estimate arrives and he phones in again loads of problems with his gas readings to cut along story short the meter is dated from 1980 and is of the 4 digit variety plus 1/10th making it from what they say an old style imperial meter they are going to sort it out- what can we expect is there a conversion from imperial to metric units

It is very likely Eon will arrange for the meter to be exchanged to a metric meter. At present, the readings are converted from imperial (4 digit) to metric (5 digit) and then into kilowatt-hours (kWh). When the new meter is in, the readings will already be metric (5 digits) and so will just be converted in to kilowatt-hours (kWh).

It is very likely the meter readers are either exercising their minimum obligation to read the meters (once every two years) or are reading it at the wrong time (this happened to us). It is quite easy for the supplier to sort.

Thankfully, your son is reading the meter often, which is great, because it stops nasty estimated bills that result in a catch up bill. Hope that helps!
  • The good thing with providing your own readings is that you can ride the seasons a bit - up the figure in summer to relieve the wallet in the winter. Also keep an eye on prices changes, it can be seriously to your advantage if you know where you stand ;)

I couldn't help but notice that my gas meter got read within days of the recent price cut, though

Rather strange the meter hasn't been read. Maybe it has been missed off EON's readings cycle, by accident?
Certainly where I live, EON have one of the better contracts in place with regards to getting meters read. They use MeterU and the meters (both gas and electric) get read each quarter. I live in East Anglia.
(I used to work as a meter reader for MeterU until late last year)

    Hi gavs dad,

mattcanary is probably right here, if there is no meter reader visiting the property at all it maybe that the address details are not on the cycle.

There are sometimes cases where the meter reading agency has no record of customers or addresses that the supplier thinks they should be reading.

This, if this simple, should be easy to update. We can contact the supposed meter reading agency and check there records and if necessary get these amended so they read the meter as they should be.

  • Hi Brian,

We suspect that problem is that he lives at number 102a - ( a house) and 102 (another house) is about 12 houses down the street - maybe they have been reading the wrong meter? He's always had problems with taxi's etc going to the wrong house. Who's responsibility is it to make sure they go to the right house?

    thanks
