Newly hatched chick - no chick crumb

I haven't seen it (or them) yet - but there is definitely cheeping under mum , and she pecks if you reach in.

My problem is that I do not have any chick crumb and will not get any until tomorrow. What (if anything) should I feed it (them).

  • hard boiled egg yolk always used to be our standby!
  • They don't need to eat anything for the first 24 hours, as they are still reabsorbing the egg yolk internally and drying off, and they don't eat in the dark anyway. As long as you get the crumb tomorrow you'll be fine. I've raised lots of sets of chicks and they never eat much in the first few hours, so don't worry.

I have magimixed up some oats - and put them in alongside mum...who is tucking into them.

No sign of chick but plenty of cheeps.

While I am sure this is the appropriate answer, (I know nothing about chicks!)

I can't be the only one that finds feeding a hard boiled egg to a chick well ..........a bit wrong?!?!?

There but for the grace of god... and all that :rotfl:

:D True, but egg yolk is what it has been living on so far!! It could be worse though - feeding it a chicken nuggett would be wrong in so many more ways!

    Thanks everyone .

Egg yolk is fine - I have couple of hens who tend towards egg eating. Feeding any kind of cooked chicken scraps is absolutely an ethical no no.

Today both my husband and daughter bought chick crumb so chick is now well catered for. Mum has moved off the eggs - and I do not think she will be going back to them. I can only see one open shell so probably only one chick. No sign of it though as mum is puffed up and keeping her baby hidden from view. I will post a pick when I eventually get to see it.

This little mummy has raised a single chick each year for the last 3 years - she is an excellent broody.

    I love little chick-a-biddies.
