Bank Statement Question

Hi,
I am just checking my historical bank statements at Natwest and have a number of entries with "C/R" as the transaction type. The amounts vary from £50 up to a few thousand.
Anyone have an idea what C/R refers to? The payment description is just an 8 digit number.
I know a bit about banking so my first thought was Cheque given the payment description but then it should be CHQ, also not BACS (BAC), Direct Debit (DD).

On current online statements C/R means a (manual) credit and is followed by a 6 figure number which is the number of the paying in slip you used - they have numbers just like cheques.
On a paper statement the same thing appears as CREDIT nnnnnn followed by the sort code of the branch it was paid in at.0
