Damp Smell in house

This is a bit of an odd problem, My wife smells it almost all the time, I only smell it some of the time (when you come in the front door). Also the smell dissapears (or your nose gets used to it) after a minute or so. It doesnt really bother me but it drives the wife up the wall and so she drives me up the wall etc.
Anyway the house isnt old and when I moved in 7 years ago we had a complete re-decoration, new kitchen and bathroom etc, so i dont think that its the house itself (although I may be wrong). We are connected to our garage via a corridor, when we moved in there was mold on the ceiling (not horrendous but enough to notice). I cleaned it off and protected it and it has not returned (visually anyway).
At first I assumed that it was damp coming into the garage and so I checked but could find no obvious leaks, next I put a dehumidifier in the garage, and over 3 days it collected a cup of water so I dont think the garage is that damp.
does anyone have any other suggestions or ideas on how to get rid of the phantom smell? I had a look at ionisers and other stuff but don't want to spend large amounts of cash on things that dont really work or are uneccessary.

Is there a drain running through the corridor - maybe stale water if there is.0

It's an interior corridor with a double glazed door at each end (front and back of house). I have no idea if a drain runs underneath it but its a possibility, I will have to get the plans.0 -
Hm I think there is a drain that runs near or directly underneath there, not 100% but it seems likely from the position of the inspection hatches. Guess I could pour a load of bleach down and see if that makes a difference?0
