help with fitting an open fire

hi there, looking to fit an open fire which will consist of a cast iron surround and a clay fireback/

ive knocked open the chminmey breast to reveal the original builders opening, however,

ive come across some additional brickwork which was probably there to pack in the original fireback. the fireback i have purchased fits into this brickwork, so should i just leave it there, or go right back to the original opening and start again??

If the brickwork is OK then just leave it, if the fireback fits.
