I am looking to buy a family car this week and the choice is between two cars:
- ford s- max titanium (59 plate, 2.0 L diesel, 9000 miles) for £18000
- Toyota corrola verso (57 plate,2.2 L diesel, 15000 miles) for £11400

we are small familt (only two kids 5 and 3 years) so i feel the verso should be enough but i want to know from people who know about it as i have never noticed a verso till i saw it this week.

I've driven my sisters Verso and find the boot on the small side.

Well you should be able to get the S-Max new for very close to that price.

To play devils advocate why do you need/want an MPV?

thanks alot..your links are great...for a £1000 more than what they quoted me i can get a brand new s-max (hopfully will be the new shape coming out this month)...what a rip off dealers....I think i will stick to the verso although I am sure they will try not to refund me the £100 I paid them to get the s-max from another location although they assured me verbally that if i dont like the car they will refund the £100!!!!

I had a corolla verso diesel. The boot was fine in 5 seater mode ( I bought it for a wheelchair), even using 6 seats the boot wasn't bad it still fitted the wheelchair. The rearmost seats are difficult to access if you are an adult but we didn't use them very much.
I think Toyota do an Avensis verso as well so they may be worth a look.

Don't forget to play one dealer against another to get the best deal.

we're driving a hired S-Max 2.2 Titanium at the moment. I had been looking at the Mazda 5/Toyota Verso/C-Max(even though it's only 5 seats) as potential cars for us, same family size and ages. The S-Max is very very nice I have to admit and it's great to drive, but I'm just thinking there is too much. We only use the 3rd row if we have relatives staying and that is only every few months. The rest of the time we'd be lugging the extra weight etc. round for no gain and for the cheaper cost I'm still erring towards the original 3 I mentioned, though not sure which of those.

I have a Mazda 5 (which is being replaced by a really ugly new model at the end of 2010, so good deals available) and it's the best family car ever with those sliding doors. It's not really a full long distance 7 seater as the centre middle seat is a tad on the small size, but we generally run it in 6 seat configuration and fold up the centre seat so the kids can walk through to the back, instead of faffing around folding and sliding seats.

Because it was the cheaper of the two or did you like it more?

    many reasons:
    - cheaper
    - ford smax new shape coming out this month
    - size of verso is adequate for our small family
