Job Offer and Credit Check Question

I have been offered a job in IT with a financial institution.

I have lived at my address and am on the VR for 3 years.

I have no credit at this address, totally clean, no searches, nadda.

In the past I have had bad credit but nothing that links to my current address.

My employer as part of their normal employment procedure wants to credit check me and wants address for 3 years.

Will they still discover my 'previous' on the basis they have my DOB and full name?

IE can they search on my name and DOB only and find my 'previous'?

    Hi,
I work for a financial institution and i also have a bad credit record.

What they are looking for is anything related to money laundering and if you have ever been made bancrupt (as you would need to be risk assessed if you have access to certain information or in a regulated job).

Don't worry as long as when you sign the form to say you allow them to check your record you delcare any problems you've had in the past it will be fine.

If I declare any problems I have had in the past I will instantly loose the position.

I don't want to be dishonest here but don't want to give information that may lead to me loosing this job offer (I need the money!).

All I'm asking is can just by using my name and DOB they trace all my previous credit activity?

    Also I just read

"Secondly, depending on whether you give your consent to do so, your name is added to an edited version of the Electoral Roll. The edited version is sold by local authorities to third parties for use in marketing activity. You can choose whether you are included on the full version, or the edited version. Only the edited version is sold to third parties - but unless you choose to be removed from it, your personal details will be included within it."

I always opt out of the edited version, is this the version that gets sold to Experian et al? or do they buy the 'main' version?

    Anyone?

With regards to the opt out of the electroral register i found this

'You can only vote in Elections if your name appears on the Electoral Register. The Register is also used by Credit reference Agencies, like Experian and Equifax. They use the information given to assess any credit you may apply for. The register is used for Elections, prevention and detection of fraud.
The Edited Register is available for sale to any person who wishes to purchase it. You have the right to 'opt out' of the Edited Register which would prevent your details being sold.'

so it looks like experian have access to the full register.

Without knowing the reason why you think they would revoke the job offer i can't really offer any advice..other than bankruptcy shouldn't affect this unless you were dealing specifically with clients money.

Also while i think about it...have you checked your credit report and does it show your old address, or just your new one?

If they are both already on the same record then the company would be able to see it.

Well let me give you an example. If you apply to work for RBS and have a default in the last 6 years they will instantly turn down your application. for employment.

How bad is your bad credit?

Do you have any CCJs? If so this is public information. They are available for anyone to search for on the registery trust.

The CRAs do use the full register, they don't pay for it, its the other main intended use of the electoral roll.

Personally I would not risk not declaring anything. It will be worse if they find out later.

The letters I used to get were from credit tracing agencies, never had any letters from any courts so not sure if that means I have CCJ's or not.

But without an address/link and bearing in mind my surname is Smith, can they really trace me?...its the DOB I'm concerned about.

If you don't know whether you have any CCJs you should really be checking (irrespective of the job offer).

You can check for CCJs on the registery trust website without anyone being able to trace you (you put in your name and address and its costs £8 per address).

Do you have any debts to this financial institution or to any other institution that is linked to it?

Are they just going to credit check you or do you also have to complete a declaration about your credit history?

Bearing in mind you don't know which agency they are going to use have you got recent copies of your credit report from all 3 CRAs?

I don't know what you are worrying about, they won't give you the job if you don't do the check, so you might as well give them the details and see what they think.

You only need to worry if you know of outstanding debts that collectors may chase, if they do a search your new address maybe added and linked to your old one on the credit file, and any outstanding debts held by debt collectors may now start sending letters to your new address.

Credit files are linked to a name and address, so if you had a clean history for 3 years at a new address with no issue you may have no problem.

for an IT level job, Ive always been told they do a level of search that basically checks you are on electoral roll and have no CCJ/bankruptcies.

Cash handling roles usually attract a deeper level of check (aparently)

I have a poor credit history, with 2 defaults now marked as satisfied and work in the IT department of an investment bank. When they credit checked me they found nothing, but I did mention to the HR department that I had defaulted before, when I'd been made redundant and that I had since resolved those problems and kept a clean credit history.
