A question about external rendering...

Are there any external plasterer/renderers or anyone who happens to know on MSE forums? Hope so!

We live in a 1950's steel "pre-fab" house. This means that internally our house is "normal" to look at but externally it has metal along the top half (all the way around) along the 1st floor of the house. The lower half is already rendered over brick/breezeblocks (- not sure what - it was like this when we bought it).

The "traditional" thing around here in my area for houses like ours is to get UPVC cladding put over the top of the metalwork - a lot of our neighbours have had this done recently. However, there is a house up the road that has what appears to be render over the top of where the metal is. We much prefer the look of that to the UPVC cladding look. Can you render over metal work? We've never had rendering done before so we're not sure at all. We haven't got the courage up to go and knock on the strangers door up the road, lol! :rotfl:

I don't know much about rendering but I'm guessing that if its normally done over stone, brick, etc. then that is a pourous surface but metal won't be? Anyone got any idea?

Should be possible if the metal is covered with wire mesh first. I expect someone knowledgeable will be along soon.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    Thank you. Hope so!

I've had one guy ring me back (well, he left a voicemail for me) and he says its impossible unless he was to screw on plyboard onto the metalwork first?

    Anyone else have any ideas?

I'd knock on the persons door and ask for him to recommend the tradesman.

Thanks - that sounds quite logical ormus.

Might just have to do that donnaessex - I'll try and persuade the hubby to go and knock on the door :rotfl:
