Sony 40" LCD TV faulty after 13 months

Options
Would appreciate any advice. My boyfriend purchased the above from Sainsburys Dec 08 as an Xmas pressie. Unfortunately, 1 month after the warranty expired, it broke!!!!! We contacted Sony by email and were advised to take the TV to a Sony approved engineer to diagnose the problem and in some cases, out of goodwill, they would then decide whether or not they would stand to the cost of the repair. We did as asked and was sent a quote from the Sony approved engineer, who stated that the LCD panel needed replacing at a cost in the region of £300. We forwarded this quote and letter to Sony head office and are still waiting for acknowledgment of such. We have instructed the engineer to go ahead with the repair regardless, as I have now been without a tv for a month. Thanks in advance.

What did Sainsburys have to say about your problem?

You bought the TV from them. It is they who should've been your first port of call.

Thanks for your reply. We contacted Sony direct, didn't realise we should have contacted Sainsburys!!

    What would you suggest??

    Thanks

Well if Sony will do the repair FOC then no problem but don't get it done until you have that confirmed. If not, then armed with the engineer's report, get back to Sainsburys and ask for a repair/replacement under the Sale of Goods Act..

I bought a 40" Sony LCD from John Lewis just before Christmas. £499 and it came with a free 5 year warranty.

Good for you, but that doesn't really help the OP.

Totally disagree. Our Sony LCD from JL was the cheapest of all of the retailers and came with a 5 year warranty.
