has anyone ever tried to grow onion sets in growbags? I have some but no ground to plant them in and dont really want to use lots of containers.
Also has anyone priced up the cheapest growbags this year?
I bought some wickes compost which seemed a good deal 4 for £12, but not looked at growbags yet.

Thanks rodney, that sounds a good price. Just need to figure out if onions will do ok in them.0

If a Co-op is closer for you they have them for £1.49 each.
It's within a few minutes from my house plus i get reward points so i've invested in a couple of these before the rush on & they all dissapear.0 -
I was in Co-op this morning but did not see them. Its only a small one though. I pass a wyevale on the school run so I am going to pop in there as well to see how much they are.0

These are good stuff. I get these when I can. My dad swears by them too and he has grown his own stuff for as long as I can remember. Dont bother with peat free ones though. Theyre a bit twiggy.0 -
They need a deeper root run. You could do spring/salad onions in a growbag though.
We did however manage to grow onions successfully in containers last year, so if you really wanted to use a growbag, why not up end it, and grow in the top?0 -
If you;re going to use gro bags I'd sink three biggish plant pots into the grow bag and top them up with compost and put one set into each pot.
They'll work out as mighty expensive onions though as you can't get a huge yield from each grow bag.0 -
Thanks everyone, think I will just do a few in containers then. Thats the trouble sunflower I think they are going to end up expensive with the compost I will use.
I am doing loads of spring onions again this year which work great in tubs.
Hopefully for next year I will have a proper plot, so I can do a few more bulb onions then.0
