Have to agree with wallbash. You would think from some people that wiring up a socket required membership of some elite group else you will die mysteriously. As for 'you don't get a second chance where electricity is concerned', what a load of emotive twaddle. Take precautions against risk just like in any other activity - or are some people just totally lacking in common sense these days?

At the present rate of silliness of the powers that be, one can forsee a time when all electrical devices that plug into the mains be safety tested every 3 years by a 'competent person'!
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

i shall try myself but ill have good old dad on the end of the phone just in case! thanks for your help, it sounds straightforward and providing i turn the leccy off i cant see much of a problem. in fact one of the sockets has been knocked off the wall and i can actually see through the back of it to the blur, brown and green/yellow wires so i already have a fair idea of where they go!

The H&S/fun police already have this on business premises, the technical term is portable appliance testing

JuSt wanted to say a big thanks for all the advice I got on here. I changed 4 plug sockets yesterday and now I have lovely clean sockets and saved myself a packet. Plus I feel like I really accomplished something. I may be a girl but I feel like a diy king! Thanks again
