Carrots in Containers

I dont know if it was because I replanted carrot seedlings or because of the pots I used but my first attempt last year and the carrots were quite small, I thought I had enough depth for the carrot to grow in the pot0

I started carrots off in pots.. and them put alot of them in the soil.. I did leave some in pots to see.. if i remember correctly you need a pot about 9 inches deep depending on the type of carrots you are growing....God helps make my veggie patch grow. He provides everything I need.. It only fails if I do NOT do as He has told me!!
Imagine if Christianity spread like swine flu... how much better the world would be!! God Bless!0 -
I had my first attempt at carrots last year and I planted them in a kind of trough thing - some were about 4 or 5 inches long and they were very tasty. This year I'm going to plant them in a spare recycling box which is a lot deeper so hopefully I'll get bigger carrots.0

Carrots should not be replanted, they are sown where they are to growWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -
I've successfully grown them in lengths of drainpipe. You could sink a length into your tub in order to give you the enxtra depth that you need.
Or, you could go for a stumpy carrot variety like Chantenay.0 -
I did them in flexitubs last year but couldn't bear to thin them out so they all grew quite small!

This year I will be more brutal...:(
I did read that you should fill your pot/tub as normal then use a dibber to make lots of deep holes, fill them with a mixture of sieved compost and sand. Then sow your seed on top of this and your carrots are near guaranteed not to fork!
(I'll be trying this method myself this year - so i'll let you know how I get on!):D2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....
did it!!!
2010 - Attempting to make my garden a beautiful place for dd2 to enjoy!0 -
I did my first attempt in a Black builders bucket and from advice from other gardeners did not thin them out as i was told they would push them selves and make room in the container BAD ADVICE the carrots did grow and jammed in the bucket I could not get them out so I could pick what I wanted until I tipped the bucket out and there were the smallest sweetest carrots I have ever tasted (like baby carrots) :jThe solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.0
