I have held off for 3 weeks to await the expected price cuts from AMD. The X2 4200+ is now around £135. I'm told that the Conroe E6300 will be about £150 but may not be available for a month or two yet.
Is it really worth waiting - it seems that there is always something new around the corner. I agree that the £120 price drop in the AMD processor was worth waiting on but is now the time to go for it.
DDR or DDR2 - which one do I get?

Thanks for that - made interesting reading.
However it appears that whilst the E6300 is ahead in Multimedia encoding(which I don't use very much) they seem quite similar in other ways. Sometimes the X2 4200+ has the edge and sometimes it's the E6300. In Office XP for example, the X2 4200+ has the edge.
To be honest I'm not sure if there's much to choose from between these two. The Conroe E6600 - yes definitely but I can't afford that! It may also be another month or two before the Conroes are generally available.
Any advice on DDR v DDR2?0 -
I am planning on getting the E6600 as I was impressed by the reviews but I am also opting for a amd64 barebones system to replcae my ageing Intel willament 1.50

Don't just look at the cost of the CPU. The Core 2 supporting motherboards are also a bit more expensive than those that will support the AMD chips.0
