Painting Floorboards with Gaps

I am thinking of painting the floorboards rather than getting laminate flooring. It's for a small single bedroom so its not very big. I just wondered if anyone has any ideas on how to fill in the gaps sucessfully and it actually last. They are boards without tongue and groove though as the house was built pre-war so it makes it a bit more awkward. I just thought it would save a bit of money as I'd have to have someone fit the laminate flooring anyway.
What kind of paint would be the best too?. I want to make the room look as big as possible so I was thinking magnolia the same as the walls but I'm now wondering if a bit darker might be more practical and hide the gaps a bit more but its what kind of paint is the best really?

Hi,
I've just done my attic floor boards and am really pleased with the way they've come up!
I filled the gaps with wood filler then sanded them. So far there aren't any cracks, so fingers crossed! I painted them with Wickes floor paint - there's a good range of colours, including some light ones - cream etc..
Good luck!0 -
dont just use any old wood filler. it will shrink and crack with time and eventually vanish up your hoover. use a decorators caulk. it will move with the movement of the floor and it can be painted on.0
