Sky+ Box not working after power cut - Help!!

Hi, I'm hoping somemone can help.

After a power cut, the Sky+ box wouldn't turn on - so I unplugged it, waited a short while, and it came on -
it went to the information screen (as normal) and I pressed 'select' to watch TV. A strange message came up on screen - (sorry, I cant remember
much of it) that something was wrong and to press either select or back up (I'm nearly sure it added 'without support' if I chose the back up option).
I pressed the select button and the unit powered down and wont come back on. I've done the unplugging bit again - a few times -the red light is on but nothing
happens. Its only 14 months old. I hope this makes sense to someone and advise me what to do?

Thanks in anticipation (and trepidation)

    Try this:

    1. Unplug the Sky box and leave it off for 5 minutes.
    2. Hold down the BACKUP button on the front of the Sky+ (Not the one on the remote).
    3. Power on the Sky+ from the mains while BACKUP down.
    4. Wait for software download screen to appear.
    5. Release the BACKUP button.

That will not work if the receiver will not power up.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    We had the same problem.

My husband rang Sky who said the hard disk had been corrupted (this was after a power cut).

They talked him through how to reformat it (they informed him that everything that was on his hard disk had been lost and was unrecoverable).

The red light can take a long time to clear, it did come back on and we have had no probs since.

This happened to me when I accidently switched off the Sky box at the wall socket as it was recording. I did try updating the software as described by Poppy10 (which did work, as the red light means it has power, and I think the software is stored on the chip, not the HDD), but it didn't make any difference, so when I rang Sky they told me to reformat it (as described by BigDNutz) which works fine, we just lost all the recordings.

This is unlikely to work as the software update wont be able to come down if the box is bricked.

    Isn't that what I said?;)

I didn't have any message, but I have had this scenario a few times - box has the red light on, won't go green but you can hear the fan and the disk spinning?

I had to leave mine unplugged overnight. Worked again in the morning when I plugged it back in, wait about 90 secs and then press the Sky button on the remote.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply - sorted now :)
  • doh - sorry, meant to do just that - had to phone sky as panic had set in by 11 am :( It was your directions BigDNutz which sky advised (apart from having to press the 'select' button on the box twice). Thanks for the heads up :)
