white gold ring BROKE!

Options
Hi everyone, apologies for new profile but I couldn't log in on my old one! I hope someone can help me out. Basically my bf bought me a white gold ring for Christmas 2008, it was the wrong size and so we went back and as I was between sizes they had to resize one for me, which I received in mid-January 2009. Roll on 14 months and the ring has cracked in the inside (where it goes across my finger on the palm side of my hand). I am obviously upset by this and I believe that the ring must've been weakened when it was resized as surely rings aren't meant to break like this!? I am planning to return to the store (Leslie Davis) this week and I wondered if anyone had any advice for me regarding if I have a leg to stand on/what to say/what I should expect (a repair?)? Any advice would be gratefully received as I am not great at complaining but I really believe that an expensive ring should last longer than 14 months.

I think you may have a tough one, here.

Claims under the SOGA can be valid for up to 6 years use. However, it takes into account what is deemed "reasonable". For example, if you purchased a TV for £5,000, you would expect it to last for for 6 years, or thereabouts. On the flip side, if you purchased a cheap, nasty TV from Tesco for £40, you couldn't reasonably expect a 6 year life from it.

Also, are you sure you haven't hit it or caught it that could cause the damage? I'm no expert on metals (or the SOGA act) but I'm quite sure that white gold is fairly soft, and therefore easy to damage.

It's also quite a cheap metal. How much did the ring cost? If it say, only cost £100 or so, then you may have a problem saying that it's not fit for purpose when you've had well over a year of use, especially if they find evidence that it has taken a knock.

Just go into the shop and see what they say.

I had an old gold ring made larger years ago and the jeweller was very clear in warning me that it could cause weakness or even a crack (because the metal would be thinner) before I went ahead and had it done..... was any similar warning given ?
  • Should have had bits let in instead of stretching.
Must have been a cheap ring your bloke got from, DEL BOY or RODDERS!!

  • Any metal can have natural fault lines in them that may not show until a year or two done the line, sometimes it takes a lot longer to show. They have an independant QC deptmartment that can tell if the metal is naturally faulty and if so you should be able to get an exchange.

On 80% of ring re-sizings, it won't weaken the metal, it only does if it's going extreme sizing ie: 5 + sizes difference.
Take it back and ask them to QC it and give you a call.
