Home Bargains ID acceptance

Found myself in Prestatyn at the weekend for a festival and popped into the local Home Bargains to purchase some cheap alcohol. I was asked for ID,which doesn't bother me, i'm 23 but look younger. I gave her my provisional licence, to which she responded that the only ID they accept is passports (why not ask for my passport instead of "id"?). I can't afford to go abroad, and also don't know anyone who can countersign so can't get a passport and i doubt i'm the only one with that problem. She asked for something else to confirm who i am, all i had to hand was my maestro card and expired uni card, which thankfully she accepted.
Is this Home Bargains policy nationwide? I have never had a problem with branches in england (and i used to work in one!), and i'm wondering if its just exclusive to wales? Just thought people should be warned so they don't get caught out.

ARGH! I emailed their complaints department about this when I was refused in my local store. They replied to say that their policy is to accept any official photo ID and that my store was wrong to refuse the sale - email and complain, or they will never know where to re-train.0

Does a provisional licence have your photo on nowadays ? Just a general query, I've not seen one for many many years. Obviously if it doesn't, then they can't accept it as photo id, unlike a full licence.0

Belated update:
Got a phone call from the area manager who apologised and informed me my ID should have been accepted, said he'd have a word with the store manager and staff regarding ID.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
