Hello i used to shop like crazy too I think for the same reasons - boredom and unhappiness at work.

I have only recently discovered this website and now if possible dont go to the shops without a shopping list as I always end up buying loads of groceries, cleaners, books, cds that I don't need. I have so many clothes now i am fed up and do not want any more. Maybe it comes with age?
I am worried about the recession and in case i lose my job so now i am really thinking before i waste money on taxis, I try to walk to keep fit, i am trying not to buy rip off sandwiches at work. I try to read a book in my lunch hour to save walking through the shops.
I am noting down at the end of the day and am actually enjoying seeing how much i have saved or wasted on rubbish so i learn from it for next week. Please dont beat yourself up if you have a bad day and spend, write it down and next week vow to beat it.

On Sunday, I started to put the money left in my purse at the end of the week into a tin and save for something nice as a treat. If we keep following this we will be financially stable and not have to worry. Remember this is a learning curve for everyone and you are miles ahead of most people who dont even know about this fab site.

Chin up pet, we are all in the same boat.

  • Fabulous advice savingwannabe. I started a similar regime recently. When I began my DMP I was finally forced to have a budget, but I still kept going over it, so now I log everything I spend on a spreadsheet...it's such a tedious task that it has the effect of putting me off spending anything! And it works - I'm actually managing to save £25 per week now, it's not much but it's better than overspending, and I transfer it into an online account so it's not easily accessible.

Works a treat. For the first time in years I feel good about how I handle money now! :j

Princessleah don't give up, we've all been there too, you have to find what works best for you and stick to it - which may mean being hard on yourself at times, but it's worth it in the long run. Now that the nice weather's here, enjoy a walk at lunchtime but just not to Asda. Don't shop online in the evenings, come back on here and tell us how you're getting on, we all need some support at times. Start selling some of your stuff on ebay, rather than buying things from there - it'll help clear your cupboards and clear your conscience! x

    Princess Leah,
Hey I spent 4 pounds on stupid chocolate today. But now i know to take in extra snacks to work next week. I just had a brainwave. If you feel the urge to shop in the evenings look at the free grabbit thread on moneysavingexpert.com. You can order nice things and only pay token postage. Just ordered 6 sample smelly candles for 75p. Luxury at a fab price.
