Parsnips in containers - good news!
Good news for anyone who wants to grow parsnips or carrots in containers.
Last year I planted both in containers, and promptly forgot about them. They didn't look like they had done much...
Yesterday when I was up on the shed roof (where the pots are) I dug around in the soil... and found some buried gold! The parsnips are the same sort of size that you would buy in the supermarket! My Chantenay carrots look a little sorry for themselves, but they are passable. Previously I've grown 'normal' carrots and again they have been fine in containers.
The parsnips are in a green box which was given to us by the council for recycling.
The carrots are in a large round plastic tub sold by Morrisons at about £7 but currently buy one get one free.
Previously I have read that parsnips and carrots need a long root run etc...but it seems they can manage in a container.
Hope this helps/encourages anyone who is trying to grow veg in containers.

I grew carrots in containers last year and was really pleased with the results. I grew normal long carrots in a tub that is approximately 1 square foot and they were great. Nice big strong plants and wonderful flavour.
I`m planning more this year
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon

Congratulations on your pleasant surprise! Parsnips and carrots are well-suited to container growing because compost is much less likely to make them fork than ordinary soil, and you get far fewer weeds too.0

Wow, do you drill holes in the bottom of the container, and put crocks etc in the bottom, then just tip in a lot of multipurpose compost, or do you mix the compost with anything else?0
