Of course economic viability of repair is an indicator of how long a car will last. If it wasn't then cars would effectively last forever because body and mechanical parts can always be repaired or replaced - its the economic viability of the repair that will determine whether a car is scrapped or not.
Crossed wires here, I should have explained my thoughts a little better. What I was saying was that on some cars, the owner might baulk at paying £500 for a repair that will see the car on its way for another 5 years. That car isn't (in my opinion) economically non-viable, its just that its owner would rather that £500 go toward something new and shiny.0
