Can you have worms in containers when growing vegetables?

I have some compost that I took from containers last year.
I was seeing what kind of condition it was in and found that it had some worms in it (the normal garden worms).

Question is would it be ok to use compost with worms in containers for growing veg?

I am worried the worms would start feeding on the veg when its growing.

I guess I could sieve out the worms somehow if I can find a suitable sieve thing for doing it.

  • I'm 99.9% certain the worms won't eat your veg. Worms are a gardeners friend.

All the worms in the compost , they like your method of growing and worm casts add the goodness to it , try buying in worm casts from a worm farm ! They are used to fertility of the soil .

Worms won't eat your veg. They will help you by conditioning the soil. Even if you were to pick all the worms out of the compost, they will find their way back in again through the drainage holes. Concentrate your worries on the baddies like vine weevil, slugs & snails and woodpigeons. (A woodpigeon ate 53 of our veg plants overnight! Haven't had a problem since we started stringing up old CDs over veg plot)

Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

When I've grown vegetables in containers I've even chopped up some very fine vegetable peelings, (carrot peelings, banana skins, and dug them into the surface of the container to "feed" the worms as they compost down. My theory is that it helps to keep the compost healthy and my vegetableshave never been harmed by this process.
  • worms good, but reusing old compost is bad. Put it all in the compost bin if I were you
