Vegetable growing newbie in information overload

Hi all,
I had a brief try at growing fruit and vegetables last year with some success, namely strawberries, tomatoes, chillis and peppers.
My attempts at bringing on sweetcorn in a greenhouse failed miserably.
I have now moved to a new house and have been working away on getting the land ready in time to plant some veg.
I have a greenhouse, propogator, and 5 small vegetable patches.
I have made a definite list of what I would like to grow, and would like pointers on what I can grow in a propogator and when I can grow them.
Here goes;
Brocolli
Cabbage
Kale
Lettuce
Mesclun
Spinach
Broad beans,
Runner beans
French beans
Peas
Melon
Sweetcorn - already sown in propogator but I think I am too early
Mint - plants purchased and currently in greenhouse
Corriander
Parsley
Strawberries - Five plants currently on the windowsill
Blueberries - 2 bushes purchased from B&Q
Garlic - Cloves bought from B&Q
Chives
Onions - Bulbs bought from B&Q
Potatoes - Currently in the greenhouse to chit (not much growth though)
Carrots
Beetroot
Radish
Turnip
Totatoes - Currently in the propogator
Peppers
Chillis
I also have a pond which at the last count had 54 frogs in, along with some spawn.
Can this have any negative effects on my gardening exploits?
Sorry this post is so long winded, I have searched books and the web and can't find definitive answers.
Thanks again.
Paul

So jealous about the frogs...they will eat all the slugs.
I'd get the garlic in ASAP and the onions.-Straight into the ground.
I think there is no real definitive answer as to when to sow. A lot depends on if you have room to 'harden off' things, where you live etc etc.
For the record I sowed my toms, chillis, and peppers last weekend..Didnt use a propagatoe just a pot with clingfilm over on a warm sunny windowsill, all are showing the very first signs of life.
I also sowed some dwarf beans and broad beans in pots with no covers alson on windowsill but actually think I may of been a bit early with them.
There is another thread here where people post what they ahve sowed/planted....could give you some pointers.LBM 10/08 £12510.74/0 -
That's a lot of questions with no definitive answers Paul if you don't mind me saying.
My gyo on a budget blog
http://barkieology.blogspot.com/
has some of the answers for you though.
The back of the seed packets will tell you if you need to sow indoors or outdoors and as to timing to sow indoors you need to work out when your last frost is likely (this depends on where you live) so that you don't sow too early and they go leggy due to lack of light (more is on my blog). Garlic needs a cold spell to start though so plant that outside now.geordiepaul2001 wrote: »Hi all,

The frogs are usually seen as being gardeners friends because they eat slugs. I haven't heard anyone complain about them jumping onto and squashing plants.
A good cheap book is D G Hessayon "Vegetable and Herb expert" .
Have you tried googling the name of a plant with the word "growing" - ie parsnip growing ?No longer half of Optimisticpair

Brocolli (sown into pots in the backroom)
Cabbage(sown into pots in the backroom)
Lettuce (sown into pots in the backroom)
Peas (sown into pots inside house)
Melon (sown into pots in house)
Sweetcorn (sown into pots in house)
Carrots (as previous answers)
Beetroot (as previous answers)
Totatoes - (previous answers)
Peppers - (previous answers)
Chillis - (previous answers)
Mint - (just started growing) HINT: do not put any herbs straight into veggie patch!!!
Corriander (just started growing)
Onions - (planted 1 in a pot inside house to see what happens)
Potatoes - planted some into soil outside straight away 3 weeks ago to see what will happen
When I say "house" I mean actually house not a greenhouse. they are all in pots in the backroom on tables. tables are protected by plastic covering
there is alot more info on my own thread "Story of Hugsville Patch"
also all the mistakes I have made
God helps make my veggie patch grow. He provides everything I need.. It only fails if I do NOT do as He has told me!!

Have to say Paul thats really an ambitious amount. Im a newbie too, and am bowled over with the amount of info and advice.
I would be honest and say are you sure you want to be doing all this? Is there anything there you could do without?
If not get yourself ( or print one off) a calendar where you can write everything on where you have planted/ when to plant/ etc.
I would recommend TITCHMARSH kitchen gardener- a number of us oin the newbies to gardening thread have it- come over, lots of newbies helping each other.
right now in your propogator you can do chillies/ peppers/ tomatoes
Chilies seem to be doing well - all 4 seeds I planted are growing fine in the prop. They have come out of prop now after 3 weeks and now on warm windowsill . dont overdo these, as they take up valuable space and time and to be fair how many can you eat?
Just a few thoughts there!
Lettuce
Mesclun
Spinach ( you can start inside in container if you want it for salad leaveS?)
Broad beans, ( Ive done mine 2 weeks ago in toilet roll inners in unheated greenhouse, they are now starting to pop up)
Runner beans ( not yet, april)
French beans ( april)
Peas ( yes Ive started early onward in pots in the greenhouse, starting to see the seed leaves)
Sweetcorn - already sown in propogator but I think I am too early
Mint - plants purchased and currently in greenhouse ( repot these into bigger pots if they are supermarket ones as they will die otherwise & run to seed as not enough soil )
Corriander
Parsley
Strawberries - Five plants currently on the windowsill
Blueberries - 2 bushes purchased from B&Q - are you putting these in planters or the ground? I have mine in pots with drainiage and ericacious compost from B&Q these are outside, now is a good time, if yoiu are putting in the soil you might need to feed it?!?!)
Potatoes - Currently in the greenhouse to chit (not much growth though) - might be too cold in there try bringing indoors)
Carrots yes now is good if you are in a warm area mine are in container under fleece outdoors
Beetroot yes im doing mine today in a container will stay in unheated greenhouse
Radish not yet- i think april
Totatoes - Currently in the propogator
Peppers these can go in prop
Chillis:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
