Contents insurance for private tenants

Hi Folks!

Been reading these boards for a while now and getting some valuable tips though I need one more!

Myself and three friends are moving into a rented property and we’re finding it difficult to get a reasonable quote.

Am I right in thinking that the likes of Tesco / ESURE do not insure individuals in rented properties?

We are not students and we are finding it difficult to get a cheap quote or even find out what companies will insure us.

Any tips?

Thanks!!

Dale.

Not sure how you are doing this. Are you trying to get ONE policy to cover you all, or are you looking for four individual policies?

If you are trying to get one and not getting very far, then I'd suggest that you try insuring your own possessions only and asking your friends to do the same. Of course, if you have lots of shared possessions it complicates it, but you could set up an agreement to say what belongs to who i.e. who would get what should you give up the house.

And welcome to the forum. Watch out though, it can be very addictive!

    Thanks for the reply!

Ideally we will be looking for one policy to cover all four of us.

I was hoping it would be easy, sort of thing your parents get to insure the whole household however a lot of place do not offer this services for individuals.

    Oh well, back to Google!

    Cheers.

Having looked at a sum insured policy (rather than a blanket one) there is nothing in the document that says that all the members of the household have to be related. The one issue of cause of having a single policy is that all payouts for claims would be made to the policyholder rather than any one else named on the policy so you would need to make sure you dont fall out with them.

I remember from my student days the difficulty was getting individual policies for each of us when we had some shared possessions and as we didnt have locks on our bedroom doors.

Probably worth calling an insurer or two and ask them if all members of the household have to be part of a family or not - the policy book I looked at did say it covered for live in domestic staff (so there is the misses covered) etc but no comment either way on "friends"

Have you tried Endsleigh's Rented Accomodation cover? They say they cover up to 6 people renting together.
