Paypal money requests and buyer protection

Won an item on ebay - but the seller had listed his item in swiss francs. So when I went to checkout and pay with paypal - paypal refused to accept payment as swiss francs aren't one of the currencies they deal in.
Pointed this out to the seller who has now sent me a direct money request in euros.
Am I still covered by buyer protection?
The seller has the £500 buyer protection on his auction listing but is this protection still valid for money requests (as it is not directly tied into the auction page)?

Don't want to get into the situation again where I have to pay paypal a processing fee if item is not recieved and I put in a claim.

The seller is also trying to bump up postage costs after auction close - (I obviously told him where to go as his postage charges are already considerably higher then our Airsure service) - so I imagine he will be sending via the cheapest possible method (i.e not signed for ).
