How do I find out what my computer is doing?

Don't get too hung up on the number of processes. I would rather have 500 processes using 1KB of RAM each than 1 process using 500MB of RAM.
Darksun is correct, a number of processes which could cause disk usage run in idle such as the indexing service.0 -
seeing as mbam found a problem I would now do a FULL scan with it and see what it finds, post log and we'll see if anything else needs to be done0

Download ProcessScanner then individually check each process in report by clicking on it to see whether required or not.

No XP Professional.
I've recently had the same problem with my laptp also running XP Pro. I did a search and found a thread about one of the updates which was causing "blue screen of death" on some machines after it was installed so i removed that even though it wasn't happening on mine. It never helped anyway.0 -
I have checked the process that are running when I start up and the only one I am not sure about is explorer.exe. This is using about 39168k of my memory at the moment.
A google search has revealed:
The explorer.exe is a process; however, it is also a Trojan. cexx.org has an excellent removal process at this link: http://www.cexx.org/dlder.htm
We've found multiple infections in a few machines over the years. It's known as the dlder.exe Trojan and it drops another "explorer.exe" file in a separate folder, normally in 'C:\Windows\explorer\Explorer.exe'.
Please note that you have a legitimate original "explorer.exe" in 'C:\Windows\explorer.exe'
It also drops a startup file in your registry so it will run silently at startup...normally in your Local Machine Registry: [HKLM\SOFTWARE\games\Clicktilluwin]
I now need to find out if I have the legitimate process or the Trojan. There is only one process showing by this name.
I have run Microsoft Security Essentials and also the Malwarebytes and they have not reported this as a problem.
Is there any other way of finding out for definate?
Regards

If there's only one process by that name, it'll be the legitimate one. explorer.exe is a core component of Windows, it will not function correctly if it's not running0

Tried this but it would not run. Just got an error message.Regards
