Hello everyone.

I'm absolutely hopeless at decoration; a typical bloke, with no idea what colours work or anything like that but obviously I want to live in a nice place.

How do you find ideas for rooms. I've looked on the net and never see anything I like. Can anyone recommend sites or publications?

Also, have you used an interior designer? Any good?

Sorry if these seem like daft questions!

Thanks,
Ed.

I always go for what I like. I don't worry about what colours are in or what is the latest style, i just keep it simple and accessories with what i like. After all you will be the one living there.

Looking through magazines like good home normally has lots of idea. Also going somewhere like Ikea as they have set up rooms which are all different styles and will give you some ideas.
  • Lol, well I'm a girlie, my man is deffinately not into DIY and tends to go along with what I like. I do all the DIY as well as have the ideas. So where do I get my inspiration? Well I love watching makeover progs, relocation progs etc. Any thing that is style based. most of those type of progs will give web addresses of where they bought various items from, furniture, fitting, colours etc. then just go from there. One room at a time, look around and visualise what you like and how it could look. You must have some idea of the colours you like/dislike? Styles? Modern, contempary, retro etc
When it comes to DIY well that's down to confidence really. I'm afraid I'm one of those that if I want something done I want it done NOW! LOL Get some good DIY books, use the internet, google etc .

I really like livingetc magazine as it's a bit different to the others. I get genuinely excited when it drops on the mat each month! A lot of it can be quite simple changes or embraces the different things that people own rather than conforming to a very strict colour scheme - beautiful fabric or cushion, an interesting piece of art, a family heirloom - lots of interesting ideas where people have though outside the box for their schemes.

They have a website with a forum where members post up pics of their own homes, I've found plenty of inspiration in both magazine and forum. Most of the old pics from previous issues are now on the website. I do prefer the magazine to be able to refer to - I generally forget stuff that I've seen on the internet :)

  • Mydeco has a 3d room planner (http://mydeco.com/rooms/planner/) which lets you drag real furniture into it. It's mainly I think to encourage you to buy the furniture featured on their website, but it's free and really good for perspective (which I really struggle with shape & space)
