Help- I've paid twice for 1 payment!

This morning I tried to pay for a hotel booking on Hotelopia with my Mastercard credit card. When I tried to submit the card details, I got a message stating that the payment could not be taken from that card and to try a different card or try later on. So I paid with my Barclays debit card instead.

Then this afternoon I got a call from Mastercard telling me that the payment was taken after all, despite the message I had online to the contrary! So I have paid twice for the same thing!

I asked Mastercard to cancel the payment but they say it's not that simple, I would have to wait for the payment to go out and reach the hotel company first then make a dispute with them, and the staff who can sort that don't work weekends anyway.

Ideally I would prefer the first payment to remain as it would give more protection by paying with a credit card, but whatever happens I want 1 lot of money refunded. Can anyone in the know please tell me who should be able to sort it out easiest- Hotelopia or the credit card?

Many thanks, Sarah

Hotelopia, if they are unable to cancel the authorisation, they will, at the very least, refund one of the transactions.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

If you have 2 transactions on one card the card provider can cancel one. In your case you have 2 transactions on 2 different cards so only the Hotel can sort it out.

would be best if you could contact the company and ask for a refund. If they are not as helpful then i would suggest contacting the card issuer or bank and ask for a chargeback to be made..hopefully a refund will be made.
