Laying a Carpet

Hi All,

We have been looking at new carpet for our living room. Our budget is not great but we like the look of a felt back hardwaring carpet that is 8mm thick and felt backed.

What is the best way to lay this in our living room. We was thinking of purhcasing the 11mm Cloud 9 underlay as well at the same time.

The floor under our current carpet is hard concreat with tiles on them like u get in most houses. There is no gripper roads anyware.

Do we lay the underlay down with double sided tape and which way does the underlay go.

What is the best way to fix the carpet down ontop of the underlay

Chris

  • If you are going to go down the route of fitting your own carpet then I would suggest using the felt backed carpet as it does not require stretching.

Clould 9 11mm is very good underlay but a bit thick for felt backed using gripper, 9mm is better as the carpet fixes to the gripper better.

Also, make sure you buy a proper carpet cutter for around the edges; it creates a nice clean cut which you can then tuck behind the gripper correctly.

Also, I would recommend buy the gripper that is suitable for felt backed carpets, which has small pins in it as well.

w w w .tradepriced.co.uk - great place for underlay and gripper as stated above.

Most of all, take your time; fitting the felt backed carpet is not difficult just don't rush it and use the proper materials!!

    Good luck!

I would suggest that you do not try to lay your own carpet. I tried it a couple of times and it is really not worth the effort for the comparatively low cost of getting someone in who knows what they are doing. Obviously some people will have had success in laying their own, but I won't be trying it again. To me, it's a hard way of saving some money.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

as above. i will almost any DIY job in the house, but carpet laying is one of those jobs where a few quid spent is well worth it.
the fitter does a good job and its done within an hour.

IMO a good carpet fitter can make a cheaper carpet look more expensive. An amateur can make a expensive carpet look cheap. Pay to get a professional in.
