Time to wait between driving tests ?

Well, i have failed my practical driving test on 9th of march. Not a big deal, i'm a big boy and can deal with insignificant setbacks like this.

Problem is i can't find any concrete info (from official sources) about the time period i am REQUIRED BY LAW to wait between failing and re-taking the test. Its not that i'm impatient, but rather my missus is giving birth to our second child in ~two weeks and i'd like to retake my test asap.

Now, DVLNI/DVTA website doesnt have ANY info on the topic (me getting rusty at searches ? nah...).

DirectGov gives me 10 day period:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/PracticalTest/DG_4022540

Citizens advice bureau gives 3 for theory and 10 for practical:
http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/nireland/your_world/travel_northern_ireland/driving_tests.htm#re-taking_the_test

Now, i have incorrectly read some info which states that i need 3 days for practical test, so i thought i'd email DVLNI and ask. Reply is "2-3 days for your previous test results to get registered by their systems".

At this point i was curious on how true that is (3 different answers, really ?(remember i misread one of the articles, which i thought was three days, but it was for theory, not practical)).

So, i went to Cookstown test centre in person and asked staff. Answer - "if you think you are ready you can take the test now (assuming there are open slots for booking)....

Gah....

So, which is it ? "2-3 days", "3 days", "10 days" or "whenever you can get in the free slot" ?

By the way, failed on technicality, reverse bay parking. Fair enough. 7 minors and one serious after fully finished test.

Just want to retake my bloody test before the second baby drops, which will make taking the test so much more difficult, because my instructor is my wife :D Carting one child is hard enough, but now a newborn messes things up completely on this front...

Any links to Northern Ireland LEGISLATION stating REQUIRED period ? Or is this whole "wait ten days" thing just a guideline ?

Cheers...

#UPDATE# Apparently even DVTANI, when called for booking, haven't heard ANYTHING of 10 day wait between fail and retest... Directgov is just messing with us...

I don't think there is any requirement in terms of time.

If you go online and book your test you'll be given dates. I expect if you had to wait a period of time this would be factored in when they offer you dates online.

I failed my test several times. My advice would be to get your next one booked as soon as possible. There can be a lengthy wait between tests as it is.

I would think it's just as long as it takes to get an appointment...each test is and should be independent

Well, i just called booking phone number (from dvtani website). Asked about all this 10 days thing and they dont have a clue what i'm on about. I mean, not a clue. As if i'm the first one to ask this...

So, why is directgov and citizens advice bureau dishing out misleading info ?

If i knew all this i'd have booked the test for NEXT DAY... Someone needs to address this on official level...

Agree with the other posters, you can rebook your test online. I failed mine the first time, got it the second time! Dont like the way you do your reverse bay park before you leave the test centre cos if you muck it up you know you have failed! but hey ho!

I failed mine and came home and rebooked another test straight away online, think had to wait about a week as all slots were booked up. If you ring the test centre could you get a cancellation? Am glad I stuck at the driving, gives you so much independence:D

Good luck with the new arrival and up and coming test:)
    oooooooh i luv a bargain :)

Directgov is for England, Scotland and Wales. https://www.nidirect.gov.uk is for us lot.

I think you'd be very lucky to get a test the very next day after you failed a test.

Usually its mostly taken except one or two last slots for the day. But there is never a longer wait than 1-3 days here. Will get worse (longer wait) as weather improves. :D

as soon as they can book you in, if you accept a late cancel, you may be retaking in days not weeks, i did.
Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)

new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,000
  • When I failed my first test I was told by both instructor and examiner that I couldnt retake my test for 10 working days.

    HTH
  • Couldnt get a cancellation then test got cancelled due to snow so ended up waiting 10 weeks!!
