PPI Reclaiming Companies

Two days ago I had a call from someone purporting to be from a PPI reclaiming company. They had details of the year we took out our mortgage and our current mortgage provider. The long and short of it was that we were entitled to reclaim approximately £1600 as we were missold PPI when we took out our mortgage.

However, before they could start this claim we had to pay them £199 to release the legal documentation, which would be sent to us to sign, date and then return. It was for security I was told, and would be fully reimbursed.

Alarm bells started ringing, anyone wanting money upfront like that doesnt seem quite right.

Can anybody help? Or has anybody had a similar call?

If you got the name of the firm then report them to the MOJ. If not just forget it and if they call again put down the phone. They get hold of data cause its sold quite openly on some forums. These companies that "tell" you you have complaint want closing down in my eyes.

    Hi there and welcome.

There is a lot of this going on, if you have taken out any finance the last 6 years, its easy for them to get hold of these details.
    Annoying isn't it?

But please be wary of these companies and if you do have any cases of being mis sold, I would personally give it a go yourself with only paying for the cost of posting your letters.

  • Thanks both for your advice. I was told they had obtained our details in the aftermath of the huge fines to some companies. I was told that all lenders who had missold PPI had been ordered to release the details of their customers. Further, they only had details of our current mortgage provider and not our original provider. That, and the upfront payment of £199 is what set the alarm bells. And we have recently took out finance.

I would just ignore them and any other company or at least be wary as you have been. Its just good you did not pay anything over. Well done and thanks for posting.

So they either stole it or bought it by unlawful means as that data is not available.
. I was told that all lenders who had missold PPI had been ordered to release the details of their customers.

    That is a blatant lie.

There are too many dodgy claims companies making false claims to get people to pay up front.

BTW, what reason did they give for your mortgage PPI being mis-sold?

Seeing as most MPPI plans were not mis-sold (its mainly loan and credit card), they must have had a reason. The only ones on mortgages that are considered mis-sales are single premium and/or where you are not eligible for cover. If you are paying monthly by direc debit then that is how it should be.

Just ask the questions here. Give a bit more info and somebody will try to help you. Otherwise post a question under the Discussion thread which is a Sticky on the front page.
