Sorry to ask something so silly, but in order to use the Wii fit game is a balance board necessary?

Yes, all the games are weight/balanced related. Great fun using it by the way.0

If you don't want to get the balance board, you could try the EA Fitness game which I don't think requires additional controllers.0

I think you can do the jogging without the balance board.0
