Water Discolouration in Toilet

Hi all,

I don't think there is any way to word that title appropriately!:rotfl:

Noticed today when I went to clean the loo, the water looked like someone had had a pee and not flushed, so I flushed it and the water came back looking like someone had done the other thing and not flushed!

I got quite frustrated and disgusted, so I kept flushing and brushing the loo in case anything was stuck and I can't see (as far as I can) that there is anything thats discolouring the water. Checked the cistern and that water in there is discoloured also.

We have a downstairs bathroom, I put a glass jar under the sink hot tap and the water there is slightly discoloured, the bath taps are also pouring out discoloured water.

The kitchen, which is adjacent is fine, clear water from there.

I just wonder if this is something I need to get seen to or whether it'll subside itself?

In 5 years in this house, have never had this, would like to avoid any weekend call outs for plumbers if possible.

I've only ever seen this happen after the water company have been working on the mains in the area, but this would affect the kitchen tap too. In many houses the kitchen tap is fed straight from the mains and the others from a tank in the loft. Since the kitchen tap is running clear, I suggest either there is a problem with the cold water tank that is causing the discolouration or there has been a problem with the water supply to the house which has since been sorted (so the water from the kitchen tap is back to normal) but the roof tank is still full of discoloured water.

If the problem is your tank, you need to check it out. Is it easy to get access to the loft and have a look? If there has been a problem with the water supply that is now fixed, the problem should resolve itself soon, especially if you run the bathroom taps for a while to clear out the tank. Either way, stick to using water from the kitchen tap (fed straight from the mains) for cooking and drinking -- and for brushing teeth until the problem is resolved.

i once found a dead pigeon in a water tank.
    Get some gorm.
  • I can't get up to the loft myself, We have a step ladder but only my huband is tall enough to get from it up to the loft safely, so I will get him to look when he's in.

Not aware of Welsh Water or their contractors working locally, but will have a drive out later and check.

    Many thanks
